Section & Working Groups election results

In 2024, elections were conducted for the leadership teams of 11 Sections and Working Groups. The voting period concluded on 14 May, and we are pleased to present the election results below. The elected officers will formally assume their positions at the General Assembly during the Christchurch conference.

We would like to thank all the candidates who demonstrated their interest in serving as officers for a section or working group, as well as to everyone who participated in the voting process.

Community Communication and Alternative Media Section

The Community Communication and Alternative Media Section currently has two co-chairs and two vice-chairs. One co-chair and one vice-chair positions were open for election.

81 votes received (42%)

There were 2 candidates for 1 co-chair position:

  • Andrew Ó Baoill (University of Galway, Ireland) received 62 votes (77%)
  • Monerica Santiago Arnuco (Universidade Católica Portuguesa Faculdade de Ciências Humanas, Portugal) received 13 votes (16%)
  • There were 6 abstentions (7%)

Andrew Ó Baoill is elected as co-chair of the section for the 2024 to 2028 period.

There were 2 candidates for 1 vice-chair position:

  • Amparo Cadavid (School of Communications, UNIMINUTO, Colombia) received 54 votes (67%)
  • Bing Ni (Universidade Católica Portuguesa, Portugal) received 16 votes (20%)
  • There were 11 abstentions (13%)

Amparo Cadavid is elected as vice-chair of the section for the 2024 to 2028 period.


Gender and Communication Section

The Gender and Communication Section currently has two co-chairs and two vice-chairs. One co-chair and one vice-chair positions were open for election.

124 votes received (43%)

There was 1 candidate for co-chair:

  • Carolina Matos ( City University of London, UK) received 117 votes (94%)
  • There were 7 abstentions (6%)

Carolina Matos is re-elected as co-chair of the section for the 2024 to 2028 period.

There were 3 candidates for 1 vice-chair position:

  • Priya Chadha (GGDSD College, Panjab University, India) received 23 votes (19%) 
  • Gauri D Chakraborty ((Bennett University, India) received 25 votes (20%)
  • Patricia Núñez Gómez (Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Spain) received 65 votes (52%)
  • There were 11 abstentions (9%)

Patricia Núñez Gómez is re-elected as vice-chair of the section for the 2024 to 2028 period.


Global Media Policy Working Group

The Global Media Policy Working Group currently has two co-chairs and two vice-chairs. They are changing the Head composition to one chair and one vice-chair. The chair position was open for election.

There was 1 candidate for chair:

  • Gerard Goggin (Western Sydney University, Australia) received 35 votes (95%)
  • There were 2 abstentions (5%)

Gerard Goggin is elected as chair of the working group for the 2024 to 2028 period.


International Communication Section

The International Communication Section currently has one chair and two vice-chairs. All three positions were open for election.

89 votes received (39%)

There was 1 candidate for chair:

  • Sudeshna Roy (Stephen F. Austin State University, TX, USA) received 71 votes (80%)
  • There were 18 abstentions (20%)

Sudeshna Roy is elected as chair of the section for the 2024 to 2028 period.

There were 3 candidates for 2 vice-chair positions:

  • Pınar Aslan,(Uskudar University, Türkiye) received 44 votes (49%)
  • Anilesh Kumar (Beijing Normal University - Hong Kong Baptist University, China) received 47 votes (53%)
  • Manisha Mishra (University of Agder, Norway) received 40 votes (45%)
  • There were 8 abstentions (9%)

Pınar Aslan and Anilesh Kumar are elected as vice-chairs of the section for the 2024 to 2028 period.


Islam and Media Working Group

The Islam and Media Working Group currently has one chair and two vice-chairs. All three positions were open for election.

There was 1 candidate for chair:

  • Fatma Elzahraa Elsayed (Cairo University, Egypt) received 23 votes (92%)
  • There were 2 abstentions (8%)

Fatma Elzahraa Elsayed is elected as chair of the working group for the 2024 to 2028 period.

There were 2 candidates for 2 vice-chair positions:

  • Abida Ashraf (University of the Punjab, Pakistan) received 19 votes (76%)
  • Saima E. Shahid (University of Punjab, Pakistan) received 16 votes (64%)
  • There was 1 abstention (1%)

Abida Ashraf and Saima E. Shahid are elected as vice-chairs of the working group for the 2024 to 2028 period.


Media, Communication and Sport Section

The Media, Communication and Sport Section currently has two co-chairs. They are adding a vice-chair position. One co-chair and one vice chair positions were open for election.

  • Peter English (University of the Sunshine Coast, Australia) received 28 votes (97%)
  • There was 1 abstention (3%)

Peter English is elected as co-chair of the section for the 2024 to 2028 period.

There was 1 candidate for 1 vice-chair position:

  • Veronika Macková (Charles University, Czech Republic) received 26 votes (90%)
  • There were 3 abstentions (10%)

Veronika Macková is elected as vice-chair of the section for the 2024 to 2028 period.


Media Production Analysis Working Group

The Media Production Analysis Working Group currently has two co-chairs. One co-chair position was open for election.

There was 1 candidate for co-chair:

  • Pedro Jerónimo (University of Beira Interior, Covilhã, Portugal) received 30 votes (88%)
  • There were 4 abstentions (12%)

Media Sector Development Working Group

The Media Sector Development Working Group currently has two co-chairs and two vice-chairs. One vice-chair position was open for election.

There were 2 candidates for vice-chair:

  • Anjani Kumar Srivastava (Circular Global Communication Services Pvt Ltd, India) received 4 votes (24%)
  • Jairo Lugo-Ocando (University of Sharjah, U.A.E) received 12 votes (71%)
  • There was 1 abstention (5%)

Jairo Lugo-Ocando is re-elected as vice-chair of the working group for the 2024 to 2028 period.


Music, Audio, Radio and Sound Working Group

The Music, Audio, Radio and Sound Working Group currently has two co-chairs. They are adding a vice-chair position. Two co-chair and one vice chair positions were open for election.

There were 2 candidates for 2 co-chair positions:

  • Ignacio Gallego (Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, Spain) received 20 votes (65%)
  • Mia Lindgren (University of Tasmania, Australia) received 25 votes (81%)
  • There were 3 abstentions (10%)

Mia Lindgren and Ignacio Gallego are re-elected as co-chairs of the working group for the 2024 to 2028 period.

There was 1 candidate for 1 vice-chair position:

  • Gondi Surender Dhanunjay (Central University of Tamil Nadu, India) received 10 votes (56%)*
  • There were 8 abstentions (44%)

*the total number of votes received for Gondi Surender Dhanunjay is 18 because his candidate statement was received at a later stage. Since there were no other candidates for this position, the candidacy was accepted.

Gondi Surender Dhanunjay is elected as vice-chair of the working group for the 2024 to 2028 period.


Participatory Communication Research Section

The Participatory Communication Research Section currently has two co-chairs and two vice-chairs. All positions were open for election.

109 votes received (50%)

There were 3 candidates for 2 co-chair positions:

  • Anastasia Denisova (University of Westminster, UK) received 26 votes (24%)
  • Jessica Noske-Turner (Loughborough University London UK) received 69 votes (63%)
  • Lauren Dyll (University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa) received 74 votes (68%)
  • There were 7 abstentions (6%)

Jessica Noske-Turner and Lauren Dyll are elected as co-chairs of the section for the 2024 to 2028 period.

There were 2 candidates for 2 vice-chair positions:

  • Aniruddha Jena (Indian Institute of Management Kashipur, India) received 76 votes (70%)
  • Amit Verma (Manipal University Jaipur, Rajasthan, India) received 36 votes (33%)
  • There were 22 abstentions (20%)

Aniruddha Jena and Amit Verma are elected as vice-chairs of the section for the 2024 to 2028 period.


Visual Culture Working Group

The Visual Culture Working Group currently has one chair and one vice-chair. The vice-chair position was open for election.

There was 1 candidate for vice-chair:

  • Govind ji Pandey (Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University, India) received 35 votes (73%)
  • There were 13 abstentions (27%)
