Statements

Tania Cantrell Rosas-Moreno, Loyola University Maryland, USA

I, Tania Cantrell Rosas-Moreno, Ph.D. (University of Texas at Austin, USA), professor at Loyola University Maryland USA and an (inter)national award-winning scholar and social advocate, respectfully seek consideration of your vote. My candidacy is for vice-chair of the IAMCR Communication, Social Justice and Democracy Working Group, or CJD. I believe my longstanding relationship with IAMCR, diverse leadership roles, and involvement in numerous social-justice-based endeavors qualify me for this position.

Affiliated with IAMCR since 2004, I, truthfully, am a bit embarrassed that I did not know about this Working Group until seeing the opportunity to serve in it. My first thought was, “Where have I been all these years?!” I realized I was predominantly in the International Communication Section, where I served as the vice-chair for more than a decade. Similarly, I have also engaged with and presented in the Gender and Communication Section; Media, Communication and Sport Section; Religion and Communication Working Group; as well as been involved with the Emerging Scholars Network Section and Health Communication Working Group. In many ways, I have considered IAMCR my intellectual home, since I am a Global South scholar and live for the richness this conference provides!

Complementing my IAMCR leadership and activity, which has been extensive and, to me, at least, treasured, I have served in a variety of leadership positions in other organizations. For instance, I have served the AEJMC International Communication Division (ICD) in several capacities; while serving as secretary, she helped create the inaugural Membership Chair position, then served in that capacity. Also, I served a number of times as the liaison for the ICD to the Commission on the Status of Women. Outside of academia, I have served president of a local women’s religious organization, where I saw to the spiritual and welfare needs of some 400 women and their families. Similarly, I served as president of a children’s organization, attending to the learning, well-being and special events of about 75 children, all from diverse socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds, ages 18 months to 12 years.

Perhaps my social advocacy qualifies me most to assist this Working Group. I have worked with about 50 nonprofits in Maryland, lifting two public relations campaigns to national notoriety for fighting human trafficking (PRSSA Teahan, 2014) and raising awareness about resources for those leaving homelessness/houselessness (PRSSA Teahan, 2023). I raised my community partner, The Philemon Ministry, which assists former incarcerated men to reenter society successfully, to be the 2025 Loyola University Maryland Milch Award Winner. Also, for my social advocacy, I am PR News’ CSR & Diversity Outstanding Co-Educator of the Year (2021), Ragan’s Top Women in Communications Honoree, Mentor Category (2020), PR News’ Top Women in PR Honoree (2019), PRSA-MD Educator of the Year (2018), among many other recognitions. I am also spearheading a national public health campaign for children with pacemakers.

I would be honored to bring my unique IAMCR institutional leadership experience and institutional memory as well as my well-honed, award-winning diverse organizational management skills to assist CJD leadership. Thank you for considering voting for me!
