Ireland's President Michael D Higgins spoke at the opening of IAMCR's 2013 conference in Dublin on 25 June. In a speech that included references to Jürgen Habermas, Karl Marx, Raymond Williams and Sean MacBride, President Higgins warned of increasing concentration of ownership of the media, decrying the "mega-mergers ... taking place among the search giants and social network corporations."

IAMCR has awarded an additional 5 travel grants to young scholars from lower-income countries. The grants were made possible by financial resources generated by the organisers of IAMCR's 2012 conference in Durban.

The 5 additional grants, together with those announced in April, mean that an additional 21 young scholars from low and middle-income countries will be able to attend the Dublin conference in June.

Earlier this year IAMCR announced that it would make eight US$ 1,500 travel grants available to young members from low and middle-income countries wishing to participate at the upcoming conference in Dublin. Following that the Local Organising Committee in Dublin announced that it would join the initiative and provide funding for an additional eight grants.

Fifteen of the sixteen grants have now been awarded.

The penultimate version of the IAMCR 2013 conference programme to be held in Dublin is now available on the IAMCR 2013 conference website. If you have any problems regarding scheduling conflicts etc., please direct them to the relevant Section and Working Group Heads, not the local organisers. The Heads will then feed any requested changes into the Local Organising Committee (LOC). To contact heads, see the email you received when your abstract was accepted or consult the list of all Sections and Working Groups, with links to their sites and contact forms.

IAMCR is making eight grants of up to US$ 1,500 each available to members in good standing from low and middle income countries who will be participating in our upcoming conference in Dublin, Ireland. The cash awards are intended to help offset the travel costs of IAMCR members who would otherwise be unable to attend the conference. You must have a paper accepted for presentation in order to apply. Applications must be received by 5 April 2013. Only paid up members of IAMCR are eligible to apply.

Due to the unprecedented number of abstracts submitted for consideration by IAMCR's 31 sections and working groups for our 2013 conference, some sections required extra time to complete the review process and inform the authors of the final decision. By now, all decisions have been made and authors should have been notified about the fate of their proposals. If you have not received notification, you can:

• Check to make sure that the email informing of the decision has not been caught up in your junk or bulk email filtres;
• Login to the IAMCR-OCS website to see the decision that has been taken regarding your abstract;
• Read the announcements on the IAMCR-OCS website for more details.

We are pleased to announce that IAMCR's 2013 conference will take place in Dublin City University, Dublin, Ireland from 25-29 June, 2013. The overarching theme of the conference is "Crises, 'Creative Destruction' and the Global Power and Communication Orders".

The conference theme engages with the concepts of crisis and "creative destruction", associated with historically-rare periods of intensified flux, change and all-round, multi-dimensional processes of innovation.

IAMCR's 2013 conference will take place in Dublin, Ireland from 25-29 June. As this is a few weeks earlier than normal for IAMCR's conference, the local organisers are already busy preparing.
