What is inclusive communication? International perspectives

This webinar focuses on the important but often bypassed issue of inclusive communication from the point of view of those with visible and invisible disabilities broadly conceived, from physical impairment and neurodiversity to chronic (mental) health conditions. Three eminent scholars from three different continents and different socio-cultural and epistemic contexts will address and have a conversation about the question, bringing to the fore different dimensions and perspectives.

Speakers

Meryl Alper from Northwestern University, USA, discusses the intersection between communication ethics and disability studies focusing on media and technology and the crucial roles of power and integrity in understanding these intersections.

Lorenzo Dalvit from Rhodes University South Africa will discuss how people with disabilities may be included but invisible in digital media due to technological access, algorithmic bias and concealment/disclosure of one’s condition, also drawing attention to important decolonial, historical and intersectional dimensions of inclusion.

Zhongxuan Lin, Jinan University, China will discuss representations of disability in Chinese media; framing of disability has become more inclusive but misrepresentations still persists; it will be discussed what the implications are for inclusive communication from the point of view of media practitioners, policy and people with disabilities.
