Hard Work Paid off

Zhaoyin CHU at IAMCR2024

Zhaoyin CHU, from the Communication University of China, was awarded a travel grant to present his paper titled “Emotional Flow in the Hybrid ACG Culture: a computational study on the Japanese players of Genshin Impact” at IAMCR2024.

In this article he reflects on the experience.

“Christchurch 2024 was my second IAMCR conference and I have really seen the improvement in my English writing and academic skills.

In 2023 year I didn't get accepted for the main session because of the poor language and expression of my abstracts. However, I tried again for the pre-conference with a refined abstract and made full use of my internship income to travel to Lyon. I finished my first English presentation at an international conference and received valuable feedback.

After that, I tried to come up with a new research design and worked on the literature, methods and questions as much as possible to prepare for the next conference. Fortunately, with the progress of the projects, two of my abstracts were accepted in 2024 and the Travel Grant helped me to attend three sessions on site (one as a moderator). It was the same as the last conference, I was able to interact with different ideas in the similar field and got important suggestions to enrich my essays. As I will be applying for a PhD programme this autumn, this experience itself and the useful advice I got will be beneficial for it.

Thank you again for the Travel Grant. I wish a successful outcome to the application and look forward to attending the IAMCR in 2025”.
