On 22 January, the Communication, Social Justice and Democracy (CJD) Working Group hosted their webinar “Democracy and Media: Reflections from around the world" with presentations from Masduki (Universitas Islam, Indonesia), Derya Yüksek (Charles University, Czech Republic), working group vice-chair Usha Raman (University of Hyderabad, India) and co-chair Fernando Oliveira Paulino (University of Brasilia, Brazil).

In this roundtable, which was part of the IAMCR webinar series, these four communication and media studies scholars reflected on the intersection of democracy and media in Indonesia, Turkey, India, and Brazil, taking the recently published book - Nico Carpentier's and Jeffrey Wimmer's, Democracy and Media in Europe: A Discursive-Material Approach, as a source of inspiration.

Chaired by WG co-chair Vaia Doudaki (Charles University, Czech Republic), this discussion also served as an opportunity to reflect on the relevance, or lack thereof, of scholarly work on democracy and media with a Western (European) conceptual reference point, in other parts of the world.

Reflecting, Nico Carpentier (Charles University, Czech Republic) emphasised the value of knowledge, experts and excellence within democratic practice. He also highlighted the need for bridges, tolerance and the creation of democratic alliances of the willing, fed by an overarching global curiosity– centring the role of educators and public intellectuals in achieving these feats.

Questions from webinar attendees followed, provoking discussions on the role of educators and media elites in protecting democracy and a just society.
